30 Dec 2021
Maxime Vachier-Lagrave won the World Blitz Championship in Warsow after a tie-break against Jan-Krzysztof Duda. Alireza Firouzja ended equal on points and received the same $50,000. Levon Aronian had led the event for a long time but scored only one point out of the last five rounds and came in fifth, ahead of Magnus Carlsen who ended twelfth and rapid World Champion Nodirbek Abdusattorow who ended 46th. Several participants, including Hikaru Nakamura, tested positive for Covid-19 on the final day and had to withdraw from the tournament and enter quarantine. Masks were not mandatory at the board.
