7,284,970 is not the maximum number of games in a day

Guinness World Records accepted a claim by FIDE of most games played in day, even though that number falls way short.

7,284,970 games during 24 hours have been registered for the official Guinness World Record on 20 July, the 100th birthday of FIDE and International Chess Day. Only 75,132 games, a little more than 1 percent have been played over the board. This could have been more if the presence of FIDE registered arbiters had not been required, and several organisers contacted by this author were discouraged by this requirement.

99% of the games counted for the record were played on seven participating platforms. Lichess announced that 1,117,345 games were eligible for the record out of a total of 2,958,024 games played on the day. Chess.com told Chesstech that the highest number of games played on its platform during a day was 14,598,810 in September 2023. Elsewhere Chess.com claimed that 12,5 billion games were played on the platform in 2023 or an average of 35 million a day. The busiest day was 19 February, 2023, with 69 million games.

FIDE itself claims that more than 60 million games of chess are played on average every day. In any case, the official record that was reported is a gross underestimate of the real number and thus misleading.
